Privacy Policy

This privacy policy applies to the Taiwan Smoking Map app (hereby referred to as "Application") for iOS and Android devices that was created by Sheng Mao Lee (hereby referred to as "Service Provider"). The Application is provided "AS IS". Its core purpose is to show the location of legal smoking areas in Taipei City and to hand you off to an external maps application for directions.

Information We Collect

Information you provide

Without signing in, you can browse the map, view smoking area details and start external navigation. The Application does not ask for any personal information in this mode.

When you choose to sign in to use the review, report or feedback features, the Application supports Google Sign-In, Sign in with Apple on Apple platforms, and email/password sign-in for existing accounts. Firebase Authentication handles authentication. The Application does not write passwords to reviews, analytics events, or Firestore profiles. Depending on the sign-in method, it obtains and stores:

  • An account identifier generated by Firebase Authentication
  • Your display name
  • Your email address

Once signed in, you may submit the following content, which is stored together with your account identifier:

  • Place reviews: a 1 to 5 star rating, an optional text comment (up to 200 characters), and the display name in effect when you submitted it. Reviews and display names are shown publicly to other users.
  • Issue reports: an issue type (for example: smoking area not found, incorrect location, smoking no longer allowed, opening hours mismatch) and an optional note. Reports are not displayed publicly.
  • Feedback: a feedback type and free text. Feedback is not displayed publicly.
  • Review or author reports: your account identifier, place identifier, reported author identifier, report target and reason, processing status, and timestamps. Reports are not displayed to other users. The Service Provider personally reviews reports and decides whether and how to act. The Service Provider can restrict abusive accounts from publishing reviews and hide violating reviews.

Location information

While you are using the Application, it requests "while in use" location permission in order to centre the map near you and show nearby smoking areas. The Application uses coordinates on your device to filter nearby places and set the Google Maps camera and current-location display. App-defined Firebase writes and analytics events do not include your coordinates. Google Maps and device location services process data under their respective privacy policies. The Application does not access your location in the background.

If you decline location permission, the Application remains usable and the map opens at a default position in Taipei City.

Information collected automatically

To improve quality and stability, the Application uses third-party services that automatically collect the following:

  • Usage analytics (Google Analytics for Firebase): events such as screen views, sign-in and sign-out, searches, place selection, review or report submission and external navigation launches, together with device model, operating system version, application version and approximate region. Analytics events do not include your precise location.
  • Crash reporting (Firebase Crashlytics): when the Application fails, the error, stack trace, device and operating system information, the name of the screen that was open, and your account identifier if you were signed in.
  • Advertising (Google AdMob): to serve and measure ads, AdMob may collect the device advertising identifier, IP address and application usage information. See Google's privacy policy for details.
  • Map services (Google Maps): the Maps SDK processes device and SDK metadata, IP addresses, SDK identifiers, diagnostics, and map interactions to provide and improve map services.
  • Subscription status (RevenueCat): RevenueCat creates a customer identifier for subscription services and associates it with your Firebase account identifier when you sign in. If you purchase Pro, RevenueCat processes purchase receipts and subscription status. Payment details are handled by the Apple App Store or Google Play; the Service Provider never receives your card information.

Information we do not collect

The Application does not collect your contacts, photo library, photos, microphone audio or health data, and it does not track which smoking areas you actually visit.

How We Use Information

The Service Provider uses the information above only to:

  • Provide the core features: map lookup, place details and external navigation
  • Display and manage the reviews, reports and feedback you submit
  • Improve data accuracy by checking government data against user reports
  • Keep the service stable and diagnose errors
  • Handle review and author reports, hide violating content, and restrict abusive accounts
  • Serve ads that support the free service, and offer an ad-free Pro subscription
  • Understand overall usage in order to plan features

The Service Provider does not sell your personal information. Advertising services process advertising identifiers, IP addresses, interactions, and diagnostics under their privacy policies for advertising, analytics, and fraud prevention. Other services process data as described under Third-Party Services below.

Smoking Area Data Source

The smoking area data shown in the Application comes from datasets published by the Taipei City Government open data platform and is synchronised periodically. This is public government information and contains no personal data about users. The Service Provider does not guarantee that the government data is current or accurate; always follow on-site signage.

Data Storage and Security

  • Cloud storage: account data, reviews, reports and feedback are stored in Firebase Cloud Firestore, a service provided by Google, and protected by encryption in transit. Access is restricted by security rules: you can only modify your own visible reviews. Issue reports, review reports, and feedback are not public; ordinary users can only read and delete their own submissions. App users cannot read or write administrator publishing restrictions.
  • Local storage: so that the map keeps working offline, smoking area data is cached in a local database on your device. The place cache contains no personal information. If you block an author, the Application also stores that author identifier locally under your current account, with a separate guest list when signed out. Blocking does not notify the author or hide their reviews from other users. You can unblock authors in the Application. Account deletion removes that account’s local block list. Uninstalling removes local Application data.

The Service Provider takes reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your information, but no method of transmission or electronic storage is completely secure.

Third-Party Services

The Application uses the following third-party services, each governed by its own privacy policy:

The Service Provider may disclose your information:

  • as required by law, such as to comply with a subpoena or similar legal process;
  • when they believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to protect their rights, protect your safety or the safety of others, or investigate abuse;
  • to trusted service providers who process data on their behalf, do not have an independent use of the information, and have agreed to adhere to this policy.

Data Retention and Deletion

The Service Provider retains your account data and submitted content for as long as you use the Application. You may exercise the following rights at any time:

  • Delete your account and data: while signed in, open My Page in the Application and choose "Delete account". After you confirm and re-authenticate with your sign-in provider, the Application permanently deletes your reviews across all statuses, your issue reports, review and author reports, feedback, Firestore profile, and that account’s local block list, then deletes the Firebase Authentication account. If you can no longer access the Application, email [email protected] from, or mentioning, the email address you used to sign in, and the Service Provider will delete the account within a reasonable time.
  • Access or correct your data: you can view and edit your own reviews under "My Reviews" in the Application; for other data, contact the email address above.
  • Stop collection: uninstalling the Application stops all data collection. You can also revoke location permission at any time in your device settings.

Administrator publishing restrictions and related violation-handling records are not immediately removed by the in-app deletion flow. These records are retained for 90 days after account deletion and then manually deleted by the Service Provider. This 90-day period does not apply to RevenueCat or store customer, purchase, and subscription records, which are not automatically erased when a Firebase account is deleted. To request handling of these records, email [email protected] so the Service Provider can inspect and process the deletion request.

Deleting your account does not cancel an active App Store or Google Play subscription; cancel it separately in the store's subscription management.

Age Restriction

The Application provides the location of legal smoking areas and is intended only for adults who may lawfully smoke under the laws of Taiwan (Republic of China), that is, persons aged 20 or over. The Service Provider does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 20. If you become aware that a minor has provided personal information, contact the Service Provider at [email protected] and it will be deleted promptly.

The Application does not sell or advertise tobacco products and does not encourage smoking. Smoking is harmful to health.

Changes

This privacy policy may be updated as the service evolves. When it changes, the Service Provider will update this page and the "last updated" date at the top. You are advised to review this page regularly. Continued use of the Application after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.

This privacy policy is effective as of 2026-09-11.

Your Consent

By using the Application, you consent to the processing of your information as described in this privacy policy.
